Zen in the Art of Photography, by Robert Leverant

ZEN IN THE ART OF PHOTOGRAPHY, first published in 1969, captures the joy of photographing and the meaningfulness of the pursuit of photography for the photographer and culture at large. It is not a book about how to take a good photograph. In the broadest sense, ZEN IN THE ART OF PHOTOGRAPHY is a poetic ode on photographing with an open heart/awareness that is saying thank you to life itself. As such, the text expresses and explores in simple words the connection between and the relationship of the photographer to the subject in the lens in the Decisive Moment when the shutter is released. During the Sixties and the Seventies, based on the number of books sold, this book influenced more than thirty-thousand plus photographers and non-photographers in North America, Japan, and Europe. It was used as a textbook in many universities (including Harvard) and at photography and art centers, received rave reviews, won awards, was translated into a German edition, and carried as a talisman by many photographers some of whom passed it on to a photographer friend as a well-worn and heartfelt gift. Long out of print, this is a revised edition published in 2011.

Poetic in conception, the work is actually a pretty down-to-earth discussion of the relationship between the photographer and the images he creates. --San Francisco Examiner

About the Author
Robert Leverant is a photographer and licensed psychotherapist. In addition to ZEN IN THE ART OF PHOTOGRAPHY, he is the author of PHOTOGRAPHIC NOTATIONS , ON THE TRANSMISSION OF PHOTOGRAPHY and numerous articles in photography journals and books. He has taught photography at Esalen Institute, Feathered Pipe Ranch, The Mendocino Art Center, Oakland College of Arts and Crafts, and at workshops at photography centers. He is a founding member of the San Francisco Camerawork Gallery and has exhibited his photographs there and in other gallery settings. Yoda on Photography
By Conrad J. Obregon
1

I thought I would write this review in the style of this book.

2

I couldn't center the paragraph numbers in Amazon's review software, so they appear on the left.

3

The book is really just a pamphlet.

4

The pamphlet mainly uses a single sentence, or at most, a few sentences at a time, for an idea.

5

I suppose this is supposed to convey some kind of Zen-like impression.

6

The style didn't work for me.

7

I abandoned the style.

It's not that the ideas in the pamphlet are wrong. The pamphlet is titled in a fashion similar to the famous "Zen in the Art of Archery", which by the way, would serve a photographer far better than this pamphlet. Undoubtedly, every serious photographer should believe in these ideas: it's the photographer who makes the photograph, not the camera; photography can transform the photographer; the photographer should slow down. But if the sentences in the pamphlet were strung together as normal paragraphs, they would make a nice length article or short essay. If the ideas had been explored in depth they would have made a good book, and indeed several writers on photography have done so.

There is nothing particularly Zen in the pamphlet, or even religious or mystical. If one wanted to read about applying Zen to photography, one would be better off reading the works of John Daido Loori, like "The Zen of Creativity: Cultivating Your Artistic Life" or, for a less mystical but Zen-like view "Tao of Photography: Seeing Beyond Seeing" by Phillipe L. Gross and S. I. Shapiro.

8

I'll return to the pamphlet's style.

9

This pamphlet is not worth the price.

Not what I'd hoped for
By Byron Taylor
This apparently consists of a conversation with a zen master, with every line numbered so that there are about six to eight lines per page. And in a 40-page book, you can imagine that it's a short read. I suppose it could be a daily inspiration book, but I didn't find it that inspirational.

an art of listening
By Rick Belden
Zen in the Art of Photography, by psychotherapist and photographer Robert Leverant, is a gracefully tight articulation of philosophy and process that reads like poetry. This little book is beautiful in both appearance and content. It even feels good in my hands. I'm neither a photographer nor an expert on Zen, but I enjoyed this book nonetheless, and I think that says something about the universal truths contained within.

Many of the insights offered about the process of creating a photograph echoed my own experience as a writer and poet. Leverant speaks of photography as "an art of waiting" and "an art of listening." If the photographer listens well enough, if he has developed sufficient discipline, the photo takes itself. I've often told others that I feel as if my poems write themselves, but this only happens when I'm able to give them the time and space they need to emerge.

The processes and philosophy in this book may be specific to photography, but I believe that anyone engaged in creative activity who reads it can gain some valuable insights into the value of waiting, listening, and allowing art, whatever the chosen medium, to find its own path.
