A gold mine of information on Arabic language and literature

This is a remarkable book. Remarkable in that it has not been republished for many years (It would seem none of Chejnes books have been) especially is they are some of the most detailed studies you can find on the subjects of Arabic language and history.

In this book Chejne examines the Arabic language beginning with its origins and development through history. The first part is rather brief and it must be said, the subject has been covered in detail by previous scholars. The main bulk of the book covers modern reforms and the 'revival' of the Arabic language.

I say revival, as Chejne sees the Arabic language having gone into decline under the Ottomans and only being revived during Western colonialism and the influence of modern nationalist thought. His theory is somewhat old fashioned (the book itself is rather an old publication) and much of these theories have been dismissed as nothing more than early 20th century anti Ottoman propaganda by both the great powers and modern Arab nationalist movements (Such as the Baathist etc) who have probably done more to destroy the Arab world than centuries of 'colonialism' by Ottoman or Western could ever do.

Chejnes theories simply don't ring true to the modern reader especially when the reader is mindful of the stereotype of the Ottoman being a 'Turk' only and a colonialist one at that is simply nonsense. That the Ottomans were a multi ethnic empire is a well established fact and while Chejne may be relying on the ignorance of the reader the modern reader would see through his vain nationalism in a second.

Chejne sees the Arabs as revolting against the 'Turkish' Ottomans due to the imposition of the Turkish language, regarding it as a step too far and that their revival had much to do with modern western though (something which almost all middle eastern nationalist movements did) primarily French. Chejne details the main Arab scholars and their work in translating modern dictionaries from Western languages and editing and publishing classical Arabic dictionaries. The book looks at the various movements within Arab modern thought from the early Islamist to the pan Arabist. Chejne also examines some of the ideas that were common at the time such as the possibility of using the Latin script rather than the traditional Arabic one and the popular reaction to it.

A remarkable book that is well worth finding.

bridges a huge gap

PROS:

1.bridges a HUGE gap: bringing technique closer to classical piano, to the popular music (jazz,rock, funk etc)pianist.
Classical pianists have always had the best technique. If you never had some good piano lessons (and I mean by people who can -REALLY- play) , and you play jazz or rock, you want this book. Many classical technique books are either too expensive (e.g. Sandor), too dogmatic ( my 'school' is better than other 'schools'), or just only for classical pianists.

2. neat package: book and dvd with clear instruction. Most books are written text only, a few with a cd.

3. the only piano technique book + dvd available, for the popular music pianist.

4. best of all, it breaks down wrist, finger and arm techniques. As far as I know, no one has done this in popular music piano pedagogy yet. You only find that stuff on classical piano texts such as the excellent one from Seymour Fink, however the great level of detail is likely to overwhelm the popular music pianist, unless they are really serious (which I am, no false modesty. I play jazz, rock and classical )

CONS:

1. Good advice but not very systematic, and sometimes wanders into unrelated territory, i.e. in the 'how to practice' chapter, all of a sudden things like trying to transcribe, are mentioned. Now, that's not very practical, I don't know of anybody who transcribes when they are learning a new piece. 'Practicing' means learning a new piece, or a new skill related to learning new music. Transcribing is a skill learned to improve generally as a well-round musician, not specifically to practicing. So there's some wandering digressions there, and I had to struggle to see the point. ( I am far from a beginner, I play piano at about grade 6-7 ABRSM, so that's late intermediate/early advanced, and I have a lot of previous experience because of my previous experience as a guitarist- played guitar for 16 years and piano for 3 or 4 years, and I am advanced in music theory)

2. I don't ascribe too faithfully to her method of syncronizing breathing to what you play. I found useful the idea to start playing by exhaling, but the rest clutters the mind. To me, the most important thing is really focusing on the music and the sound. But yeah, making sure that I breathe naturally.

3. In the chapter called 'virtuosity', I hoped to see more about virtuosism, but there's some exercises that are REALLY neat and literally improved my arpeggios by 50 per cent.

However, if you think the book is not worth buying because it's not perfect, you'd be making a mistake. It's well worth the price and if you are a popular music pianist and don't know much about classical piano technique. Classical piano technique has always been the best and most refined, people started to ask serious questions about piano technique when some amazing Russian pianists came out of nowhere, such as Sviatoslav Richter. But there's almost no books that dissects systematically high level piano technique, beside the Fink and some other, i.e. Aiko Onishi. Most other books carry a lot of waffling and nonsense. You hear that even from historical pianists, like Rubinstein, crap like 'there's nothing to learn'. Or 'nah, I don't practice'. Stupid nonsense like that, at best of times, waffling and useless, impractical high-flown philosophy (i.e. make music with your soul, the spirit, blah blah, we have heard that stuff a million times, practical musicians need PRACTICAL advice). Incidentally, many great musicians are really bad teachers, so always take what they say with a pinch of salt.

Back to the book: there's an INCREDIBLY useful long section about how to apply all the techniques explained in detail earlier, to pieces written specifically by Tiernan, all shown and explained. The videos explain all and there's additional notes in the book. Wow. I have buried myself in this section for 2 days now and am learning a LOT. Really neat techniques applied to many styles: jazz, rock, new age, latin music. This package FULLY DESERVES 5 stars. Killer package for a very reasonable price, to learn all there is in there, would cost EXPONENTIALLY more from a good piano teacher.

there's a note in the book about the fact that she gives the proceedings to music scolarships, so I really think this package kills everything else.

I hope she will create more material like this, either about piano techniques, or composition, or theory, etc, or all of it. I'd buy her products immediately.

Cont Piano Tech cannot make up its mind...

Contemporary Piano Technique, by Stephany Tiernan, from Breklee Press via Hal Leonard, cannot seem to decide if it is a book for those who need to learn the basics of piano playing, or if is a book for those who are already quite advanced, and desire a new approach to their current high level of pianism.
The exercises are simplistic, but the musical examples, like the Db Chopin Nocturne, are WAY up their on the technique Hit Parade. The psychological and physical aspects that relate to breathing and feeling the pulse are not presented in such a way so as to really communicate how one ought to bring these elements to one's playing in a concrete way. The posture and hand positioning elements are either so common sense as to not require this book, or somewhat at odds with the basic approach that calls for the use of only the main knuckle of each hand, rather than the finger-flicking Mde. Chaloff seems to advocate, and which I have seem K. Jarrett use on video.
I cannot reccommend this book. It is too advanced for beginners, and too simple for advanced students. It may be of some use to teachers, so that the material can be given to students at their proper level. Gyorgy Sandor's "On Piano Playing" is so much more concise, clearly written, and specific as to method and practice, than the volume reviewed here. By the way, the etudes composed by the author are the typical over-written blues, jazz, pop, new age, and salsa examples one so often finds in HL pulications. Easier, and more practical presentations of basic stylistic devices would be much more helpful. DVD is a nice addition, but does not compensate for the lack of substantive content, in much the same way as Malwee Van Bree's book does little if any justice to Leschitizsky.

This book will bring you back to what technique really is. And to have a book from the work of Madam Chaloff is a really special thing indeed. Hal Galper and Kenny Werner both mention her in their books and it's awesome to have someone to have documented and teaching it

Likewise, reviewing the second German edition (1965) for Science, the geneticist L. C. Dunn noted that "It is a sign of the widening interest in the origin of genetics that the first brief comprehensive account of its history before 1900 has already reached a second edition....

"The first edition was an excellent and succinct account of the work of Mendel and of his predecessors beginning with the first domesticators of plants and animals. The first chapters were devoted to ideas about reproduction and heredity as found in the works of the Greek and Roman writers of antiquity and of scientists and observers of the Middle Ages. The beginning of a new era in the 18th century was noted in the controversy concerning performation and epigenesis and especially in the botanical discoveries of the late 17th century and the 18th century (by Camerarius, Linnaeus, and Kölreuter). Some 40 pages (now expanded to 60) were devoted to the plant breeders and theorists of evolution in the 19th century, including Mendel, and were followed by an excellent chapter on the origin of variations and the mutation theory.... The last chapters, about a fifth of the text, were devoted to the great cytological discoveries of the 19th century, to Weismann and the germ plasm theory, to the rediscoveries of Mendel's laws, and to the first conceptions of a chromosome theory of heredity.

"The second edition is an improvement and expansion of the first. Forty pages have been added to the text, including a 12-page facsimile of Mendel's letter of 3 July 1870 to Carl von Naegeli (the holograph has not been published previously) and 115 titles added to the already extensive bibliography. Proper attention has now been paid to Karl Pearson's contributions (1900 to 1909), to the theory of Mendelian equilibrium, and to Fisher's critique of Mendel's theory....

"A valuable feature of the book is the brief biographical notices of most of the chief actors in the history of genetics up to and including the rediscoverers of 1900. Most of these notices are accompanied by portraits."

The present English translation is based on the second German edition, but it contains in turn a wealth of new material added by the author since the German publication.

A cute book about the story of Christmas

This book is very cute. In rhyming, singsong text, this book tells the real story of Christmas. The illustrations are absolutely adorable. My kids (three and one), as well as myself, are fans of VeggieTales so I knew I had to get them this book. I really wish they would make this into a movie. I think it would be a success, as it is hard these days to find really good children's Christmas movies. I would think this would be a nice addition to the classroom or Sunday school, or anywhere there are small children who enjoy reading and being read to.

Applying "early adopter" buzzwords to Lincoln, Wheeler's inquiry into his use of the telegraph has the spirit of a management consultant appraising a client's leadership style. The author relates that Lincoln personally sent out 1,000 telegrams during the Civil War, learning along the way what was or wasn't effective. Initially an intermittent user, Lincoln at times was so reliant on rapid communication that he spent nights at the War Department's telegraph office. Every Lincoln reader is familiar with this image, and Wheeler taps into this common memory by quoting Lincoln's telegraphic words on these occasions. They group most numerously around specific battles (e.g., 1862's Second Battle of Bull Run) and Lincoln's reprieves of condemned soldiers. This easy to read book shows how the telegraph's ability to provide high-speed communications shaped the course of the Civil War. As the author points out, the Union clearly had an advantage in its ability to utilize this technology. Was it as decisive in the Union's ultimate victory, as suggested by the subtitle? The author tries to make that argument, but it seems that it would be more accurate to say that the Telegraph enabled Lincoln to prevent his incompetent generals from losing the war until he finally find the men who could win the war. However, it is clear that Lincoln embraced a new technology and developed a new type of executive leadership to take advantage of it. In doing so, he layed the groundwork for the evolution of communications as a tool to project leadership and authority. Overall, this is an interesting book that is easy to read, and provides a fresh perspective on Lincoln's role in the Civil War.

Lightning-fast leadership

A truly exciting book. It shows President Lincoln stretching his communication powers to the utmost, to prod timid generals and to support energetic commanders like Grant.

Lincoln refused to accept defeat. He was confident in the justice of the union cause, and confident that right would prevail ... if only they did not lose heart. He used the new technology of the telegraph to put iron in the backs of his commanders.

Some presidents (Carter and Johnson, in particular) have used modern communications to micromanage and undermine their subordinates. Lincoln, with his excellent judgment, somehow avoided this trap, using the telegraph to both guide and empower his generals.

Wheeler shows how Lincoln's use of the telegraph trickled down to his subordinates. General Grant used the telegraph to operate as General-In-Chief while traveling with the armies, rather than managing at a distance from Washington D.C. There is no doubt that this dramaticallly improved Grant's ability to quicky improvise, based upon changing battlefield conditions. And, in Wheeler's vivid language: "His decision to operate from the field would not have been possible but for the army's central nervous system running over telegraph wires."

Tom Wheeler is the perfect author for this trailblazing study of Lincoln's instant communications. He combines first-hand knowledge of modern communications and leadership with a contagious enthusiasm for President Lincoln and the Civil War.

Lincoln uses telegraph to micro-manage the Civil War

As a commander of a Army Signal Company in Vietnam in the 1960's, I found this book to be a "must read" for me. After I read the first chapter "on-line" I immediately purchased it. Lincoln's use of the "new" telegraph to communicate in "real" time with his generals is fascinating. To view his handwritten messages that were telegraphed brings this book to life. The "bite" to many of his messages must have been painful to the generals who received them. My favorite was the telegram to a field commander in which Lincoln asked what had happened in the last 25 minutes to an action in which the field commander was engaged miles away! The messages bring to life the urgency of Civil War engagements and of Lincoln's active, on-going involvement. His frequent visits to the close-by telegraph office to read, personally, the latest telegrams from the field is inspiring. Great leaders understand unique opportunities and take advantage of them. The inability of Army headquarters' staff to grasp the opportunity to communicate was unbelievable. The parallels of Lincoln's t-mail with today's e-mail provides us with a small insight of just how important Lincoln's use of this means of communucation truly was in managing the War.
