A good source

I started this book in the afternoon and couldn't put it down till it was almost dawn. This being so, when I have extensively read the Qur'an and hadith sources on the topic, so I was familiar with the content. Yet, I still learned additional cures for the evil eye, which was new knowledge for me.

This is the third book I have read on the Jinns-which included a self-published one-and this came out on top. It skims over topics, but covers the essentials, which is sufficient for the layman. The belief of the author is sound and solid, and it is evident from his writings. His book is extremely beneficial for a majority of Muslims-including the well educated ones-who are easily led astray when faced with this subject. Many a Muslim is tricked by charlatans, who exploit the lack of sound faith and religious knowledge in the victims. The author has put things in the right perspective. My prior readings corroborate his statements.

The book however, has 3 major shortcomings:
1. There is a dire need for professional editing, from an experienced American editor. There are too many repetitions, and the grammar needs polishing. Darusalam distributes internationally, and its high time they learn and adopt international standards.

2. The book lacks citations in about 30-40% of the content. No statement, name, claim or phenomenon can be printed without a citation. Refer to point #1.

3. There are a few weak hadith referenced here. This makes one question the author's sources of research. In the presence of the sihah sitta, the massive body of reliable hadith, it should be the sole source of a Muslim scholar. One who quotes weak hadith raises questions about his work. But then again, I found the essence and teachings of the book to be sound. I would humbly suggest that such minor errors be corrected in future editions.

Darn near perfect

I'm reading this textbook for a graduate school class in environmental biology for educators. I have worked through the first 10 chapters and have completed most of the exercises, review questions, and research problems in each chapter.

So far, I think Dr. Wolfson has fairly, accurately, and thoroughly presented basic facts about humanity's use of energy, the consequences of that use, the alternatives currently available, or technologically possible, and the costs and benefits of both our current energy supplies and proposed alternatives.

Dr. Wolfson does not display any bias toward any particular view of climate change or energy use. He instead provides the student with the mathematical tools needed to quantitatively analyze a broad body of well documented facts.

My only criticism is a mild one. Dr. Wolfson does say that his text requires only high school level algebra skills. I think that is accurate. Anyone who did reasonably well in high school algebra should be able to follow the text.

However, I do wish that in the beginning chapters, as he worked through the conversions and calculations of power, energy, and work, his examples had been just a bit more mathematically detailed. I could follow his explanations, but having not needed to do any dimensional analysis for the last 30 years, I was a bit sketchy on keeping my factors and labels straight as I worked through his examples and then tried to do the exercises. In some of his examples, he implies the completion of steps that he assumes his readers already understand.

In others, he lays out mathematical solutions in a narrative form that is tough to follow, and while I was able to work through things like:

(1/5 Btu/h/ft^2/degF)(1000ft^2)(70degF -45degF)= 5000 Btu/h

It would have been a bit easier to follow if it had been laid out more clearly in factor/label format, at least for the first few chapters. Maybe the best way to address this would be for the publisher to supplement the "answers to selected exercises" found in the text with a slightly more detailed solutions guide on their website.

Altogether though, this is a well written text. The layout of the pages leaves adequate room for sufficiently detailed marginalia. It contains a number of tables and figures that are well worth tabbing for future reference and the questions, exercises, and research problems are an outstanding guide for a student who is serious about learning the material.

I purchased this product because I have a DVD lecture series by the auther, Richard Wolfson, from the Teaching Company. The auther is a fantastic lecturer and can get his point across via the written word. I love it.

Pretty good book

Pretty good book, I used it for an environmental studies class and it explained many concepts very well. The only issue would be the math problems at the end of each chapter. It would be good to have a table with conversions there with the problems so that I don't have to search through the book to find the proper conversion, but it is manageable. Overall, pretty good and you'll know more about the different types of energy sources and issues facing the environment.

How to become a Python expert.

Great book. Usually, Python books just explain the basic of the language.
This book goes way further and explain what are the good guidelines in current and state of the art projects. Of course, this is not for Python beginners but every intermediate or experienced Python developers are going to learn something.

Great book for intermediate-advanced Python developers

Really useful and well written. Note however that it is not particularly suitable for Python beginners as it assumes knowledge of the language and its main features. I particularly enjoyed the interviews with real-life, high profile developers offering tips and techniques. All in all a great addition to your python technical reference library.
