If you are a leaseholder, or advising someone who is, what are leaseholders' rights -- and what needs to be done in the event of a dispute? The answer to these and any number of related queries are available in the information-rich and easily accessible guide published by the Legal Action Group (LAG).

Now in its third edition, this well-established work of reference will bring you completely up to date on the numerous developments that have emerged since the last edition was published some six years ago. (The first edition was written over 10 years ago.)

The intention of the expert authors is `to give advice for residential tenants in a dispute with their landlord that might bring them before the First-Tier Tribunal (Property Chamber) (FTT) in England, or a leasehold valuation tribunal (LVT) in Wales'. The considerable amount of new material therefore (naturally) includes detailed examination of the replacement of the LVT in England by the FTT, together with separate coverage of the LVT regime in Wales.

There is a new chapter on that frequent and particularly fraught area of dispute between landlord and tenant: the dreaded service charges. And, if there is an intention to recover the landlord's costs, there's a new chapter on this subject as well - and much more new material besides. In all, virtually every topic pertaining to leasehold disputes is thoroughly, yet concisely examined and explained, from insurance and administration charges to legal costs, repairs, forfeiture and right to buy.

Writing in the Foreword, Siobhan McGrath, who is the President of the First-Tier Tribunal (Property Chamber) indicates in no uncertain terms, the breadth of the subject matter and therefore the scope of the book. `The leasehold sector,' she points out, `includes private landlords, public landlords, tenant management companies, owner occupiers and right to buy investors.'

decompose a program into a directed graph

As computer hardware continues to improve, along the lines of Moore's Law, software improvements have lagged. This has been particularly so with a system of parallel machines. The biggest problem is how to translate a given algorithm's implementation, that was written for a single CPU, into one for several CPUs. More to the point, how to do this systematically, instead of in a manual, ad hoc fashion?

That is the promise of Sinnen's book. It takes a program, and finds a task graph. That is, the code is decomposed into a set of smaller modules. Each module can be taken to be a node of a directed graph. The directed nature of the graph is essential to the discussion. The direction of a vertex indicates a dependency on another node. Given this graph, and a set of CPUs, the book explains how to allocate the nodes across the CPUs, in a manner that is optimal.

Important related concepts are developed. Like clustering heuristics. These are used to form groups or clusters of modules. To a programmer, think of the concept of recursion. That's the utility of clustering.

The text is heavily mathematical, as befits any application of graph theory. The crucial part of the text is at its start, as you might surmise. It explains how to algorithmically extract the dependence graph, which is a representation of the dependence structure of the initial program.

Acting for Animators

As a novice animator recently graduated, I am really glad I picked up this book. I bought it more out of curiosity than anything else. I am glad to say that I was surprised to find this much useful information in such a consice form. The book highlights many different acting forms and excersices without rambling on endlessly, and more importantly does so from an animators point of view. An animator has to approach acting from an almost backwards way, which is addressed a lot in this book. Another nice feature is that the auther cites many other references and books on the subjects he discusses, so you are free to study even further on subjects that are impotant to you. The nice thing about that is that he's done the research for you. Hooks keeps things light, easy to understand, and interesting for artists and animators of all skill levels. The only minor complaint I could voice about this book would be the lack of artwork displaying the points discussed. After reading the book myself I think this is due to the fact Hooks is trying to avoid making a generic, cookie cutter, how to book. He succeeds, so I won't complain too much. Overall, best money I've spent on an animation book in a long time! I don't care how long you've been in the industry, you'll learn something from this book!

This is a dense, thoughtful work, of lasting value, which will reward careful study. Hooks writes in an easily readable style, concisely and directly, about the most difficult and elusive portion of the art of character animation. Buy this book before you buy any other character animation title, or for that matter, before you choose software or other animation tools. You will find that Hooks' advice will also improve your script and storyboard development. One of the problems with books about computer-based character animation, such as my own "Character Animation In Depth", is that they lose value as the software they are written for becomes obsolete. Hooks' work will retain its value for a long time. Buy a copy, keep it handy, reread it frequently, and don't loan it to friends; you won't get it back. Give them a copy, instead. Highly recommended.
