Brendan Lynch is a former Grand Prix correspondent for UK and Irish media including The Observer, Daily Mail and Irish Press. As a supporter of Bertrand Russell, he was imprisoned for anti-nuclear protests in the 1960s. He has written five books, including the award-winning motor racing history Green Dust. "Yesterday We Were in America!" Imagine saying that at a cocktail party, or to your friends and neighbors--in 1919. This is in fact the phrase pilot Alcock kept repeating to the crew of the Marconi radio station near which he had landed, and who simply would not believe him until he produced as evidence a sealed mailbag from Newfoundland, his point of departure 1,880 miles back across the Atlantic. This is about as exotic a pronouncement as today saying "Yesterday We Were on Mars!" It was totally unprecedented. It had only been three weeks earlier that an Atlantic crossing by a US Navy flying boat, that in a pinch could have set down on the water and rendevoused with a rescue boat, had concluded--and that had taken 19 days of flying in short stages (for a total of 57:16 housrs in the air). And now Cpt John Alcock and Lt Arthur Whitten Brown had done a 1900-mile nonstop crossing from Newfoundland to Ireland, nonstop in 16 hours and in a rickety Vickers Vimy biplane at that.

We live in a world that has in the lifespan of one generation gone from horse-drawn buggy to putting a man on the moon and has seen everyday supersonic civilian air travel come and go. Been there, done that. But a newspaper reader in 1919 would have been overcome with excitement at the novelty of this flight--the longest distance traveled nonstop by man--in a world still new to mechanization in general and aviation in particular. (Recall that the war that had ended a year earlier--the Great War, World War One--had started with horses and ended with tanks!)

And excitement was generated again in 2005. Seeing the Vimy land in Ireland at the end of the reenactment of Alcock and Brown's 1919 flight by adventurers Steve Fossett and Mark Rebholtz inspired the author to write this book. Lynch tells an engaging story drawing from Alcock and Brown's own written records, contemporary news coverage, and from eyewitness accounts such as that of the one witness to the 1919 arrival in Ireland who is still alive. (He was seven years old at the time.) Early on Lynch threads the needle of what unlikely heroes these pioneers were so that the reader, at the end, having traveled the full arc, duly commiserates with their tragic end.

A good amount of background is established by recapping the exploits of balloonists, the Wright brothers, and the national sentiments and political stirrings that resulted in the issuance of a £10,000 (ca. £500,000 in today's money) challenge from the Daily Mail newspaper. Lynch explains the building of the Vimy at the Vickers plant located on the Brooklands racetrack grounds, and the dominance of the Rolls-Royce Eagle engines (#5244 and 5246 on the Alcock/Brown Vimy) that propelled all but one of the seven contenders for the prize money. (A peripheral but pertinent observation: Readers already familiar with aero engine development will know to dismiss the now debunked story retold here of the influence of the Mercedes engine on Eagle development. Everyone else is encouraged to bone up on this.)

The details of the flight itself will have you twitching in your chair. The story of the aftermath--knighthoods, international acclaim--casts a harsh light on the toll fame takes.

The photos, all b&w, are bundled into two sections. They show what needs to be shown but there is nothing new to the record here (not a criticism, just a fact). A Foreword by Len Deighton, an Appreciation by Steve Fossett, a map, a bibliography of books, a list of news sources (only by name and not specific issue/date or the like), and an index round out the book.

Handy guidebook--especially because we were often out of phone service!

I've used several brands of guidebooks and wanted to try Lonely Planet. I was very pleased. It had just the right amount of information. We used the restaurant and site seeing parts especially since we used other modes of lodging. I thought their recommendations were spot on.

I purchased the kindle version...I did NOT find it easy to use on the kindle, too hard to jump around to the sections I wanted. Don't think I would buy another travel guide on Kindle.

Great full length western book!!

I absolutely love it when the book I'm reading actually takes enough time to really tell a great story. This one does the job! And it does it extremely well!! Isabel's story is captivating from the very first page and Hutch is my perfect example of an alpha male!! The story engages you, and treats you to many memorable characters. Lots of well deserved spankings, too. The storyline keeps you interested throughout the entire book. I wish I could give it more stars! Well done! (Side note - I loved Great Aunt Winifred)

Best book I've read in a long time!

I loved this book! First of all, it is book length, not a novella. Second, there is a strong female main character who knows her worth and a male character that is strong enough to not care that his woman has more money than he has. Third, this is a book with a wonderful plot. If I could give it 10 stars I would! I stayed up all night because I couldn’t stop reading, I saw the sun rise!
OK, on to the review. This story is primarily about Isabel. She has been working as an unpaid servant for her brothers when she finally gets fed up and asks her Aunt Winifred if she can move in with her. Isabel has been visiting Winifred for years and sharing the stories that she has been putting on paper. Unknown to Isabel, Winifred has been selling them to magazines and has put all proceeds in account for her. Winifred recommends that she move out west to live in a house that she has inherited from a distant cousin. Isabel didn’t know that the cousin was very wealthy and owned most of the businesses in the town. While she is there, she meets the sheriff, Deputy Bill Hutchison. Deputy Hutch gets off to a bad start with Isabel by spanking her when she didn’t deserve it and then kissing her in front of the town gossip. But, he apologizes (I know, when does that happen?) and asks to court her. Isabel stands up to the misogynist men in the town and states what she is going to do and does it. She rescues Sarah and helps her find herself. Hutch defers to her in matters of her inheritance and her work. But, in matters of her safety, Isabel defers to Hutch, or her bottom pays for it.

I really enjoyed this story. I hope that Ms. Starr continues on with Hutch and Isabel’s story and also Sarah and Ben’s. I would love to read about it!

The Real Thing

Isabel is a young and self-reliant woman - ready to take on the world. But in the late 1800's the world certainly isn't ready for her! Fiery, spirited, and unwilling to be held back, Isabel chooses to leave her home town and head west. She can no longer tolerate the ungrateful, entitled, and even dishonest behaviors exhibited by her eldest brother. When she arrives in Overton Colorado, Isabel is confronted with a town filled with men who are just as bossy, much more crude, and just as dishonest. Isabel meets the town's handsome deputy after putting an unruly and overexcited half-whit in his place. Has she taken on more than she can manage?

I would classify this book as a romance with a spanking twist. The spankings are not over the top - nor is one occurring on every page. While spanking is part of this book - it isn't the only focus. The author writes a well formulated and complete story. This erotic romance is the real thing - book length and totally worth buying. It is not another novella that leaves you wanting and waiting for the next installment. The plot is well developed and thoughtful. I loved hating the story's villains - and waited for them to meet their comeuppance. I identified with this heroine and applauded her tenacity. And I couldn't help but cheer on for the hero when he takes our heroine in hand. My favorite part of the book was the romance that developed between the young doctor Ben and a lovely young woman who had been treated poorly by the town that should have been protecting her.
