Painter Hughie Lee-Smith (1915-1999) sought to transform his experiences growing up as an African American during the Great Depression into meditations on the human condition. In each of Lee-Smith's enigmatic compositions, barren landscapes, lone figures, and contrasting juxtapositions elicit many questions that lead the viewer to self-reflection. 'I cannot begin to project the meaning of my work in specific terms,' Lee-Smith said, 'for these paintings, at their best, are multi-faceted visual complexes whose many aspects are pregnant with as many disparate meanings as there are viewers.'

Active in the art scenes of Cleveland, Detroit, and Chicago, Lee-Smith found inspiration in the New Negro Movement-Harlem Renaissance and nurtured his artistic talents early by participating in the Works Progress Administration/Federal Art Project. While he objected to strict definitions of 'black art,' his personal struggles with race identity, social justice, and alienation became recurring themes in his paintings throughout his career. At times a realist and at times a romantic, Hughie Lee-Smith captured the uncertainty of a generation caught between memories of the past and the promises of the future.

About the Author
Leslie King-Hammond received her BFA from Queens College (CUNY) and an MA and PhD from the Johns Hopkins University in Art History. She began teaching art history courses at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in 1973, became Graduate Dean Emeritus, and was appointed Founding Director of the Center for Race and Culture at MICA in 2008. Currently she is the Chair of the Board of the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture in Baltimore. King-Hammond also sits on the boards of the Alliance of Artists Communities, The Creative Alliance at Patterson in Baltimore, and the Industrial Advisory Council for the NAACP/ACT-SO program. She has written numerous publications on African American artists, including an essay for the Jacob Lawrence catalogue raisonné.

about time

What a treasure.This is a wonderful book about one of the world's great neglected artists.Fifty seven full page full color reproductions plus numerous b&w photos and a thoughtful insightful biography.These beautiful and mysterious urbanscapes are so haunting and so poetic that they call to mind the work of De Chirico.There are no ancient ruins here though,there are midwestern tenements,and no Italian piazzas,there are inner city roof tops.Lee-Smith's paintings seem to express the loneliness,alienation,dreams and aspirations of 20th century African Americans.
They are surreal,they portray the reality within reality,the soul of people and places.Wounded but unconquered Lee-Smith was no bigot.Europeans, strangely conspicuous in this segregated world,sometimes haunt these metaphysical interiors perhaps foreshadowing a more enlightened time.

Hughie Lee-Smith:Enigma,Melancholy and Truth

I try to make it a thing to discover a new artist or work everytime I visit a major art museum for the first time.

Walking thru the fantastic African American wing @ the DIA,I came upon four paintings which stopped me in my tracks.They all featured a lone figure in the midst of a vast,decaying urban landscape.These subjects all seemed to be in a state of contemplation,as if surveying their current dilemmas which surrounded them.

It occured to me that this guy wasn't painting everyday urban scenes,but depicting images which were borderline surreal,almost,and I say ALMOST,in the same vein as De Chirico.These are pictoral equivalents to different states of mind and feeling.Hughie's images connect with us since we've all been in the place his subjects find themselves in.Lonely,but with a sense of hope.Quiet reflection in an otherwise loud and fast paced world.Looking far and wide across great spaces to find our place.

Onto the book itself,the text is well written and provides a thorough biography of the artist.It puts his various works into context and provides beautiful reproductions.

This seems to be the only book on the artist,which is such a shame,however we are lucky that the only one out there hits all the right notes.

About the Author
David Lowenthal is Emeritus Professor of Geography and Honorary Research Fellow at University College London. He is a gold medallist of the Royal Geographical, the Royal Scottish Geographical and the American Geographical Societies, a Fellow of the British Academy and honorary D.Litt. Memorial University of Newfoundland. In 2010 he was awarded the Forbes Lecture Prize by the International Institute for Conservation. His books include The Heritage Crusade and the Spoils of History (1996), George Perkins Marsh, Prophet of Conservation (2000) and The Nature of Cultural Heritage and the Culture of National Heritage (2005).

This tome is smart, stylish and stuffed with interesting and relevant references

Lowenthal needed a much more severe editor. This tome is smart, stylish and stuffed with interesting and relevant references, but reads as a breathlessly rambling, tediously repetitive accumulation of information rather than a sustained, well wrought argument. I would suggest a 3rd revisitation that overhauls and compresses the outline, edits out the mass of less compelling details, and elaborates the most significant examples in enough depth to truly illustrate his main points. Otherwise, so many of Lowenthal's scholarly tidbits merely evaporate rather than sink in. For a book that runs more than 600 pages, it feels frustratingly superficial.

About the Author

Great learning value!

You should understand C# code before diving into this book. I tried online tutorials and nothing comes close to just reading and using this book! Although there were a few places where I had to use an online resource to figure out exactly what the author was talking about, it still supasses any other online XNA intro.

Best XNA book, code examples contain errors, where is the Quality Control?

I found this book on the web and still decided to buy it. The book is the easiest time I think I have ever had learning XNA, however, like all programming books it seems that only experienced coders who correct errors as they read are the ones in charge of editing and quality control.

For example, on page 46 it tells you to include a line of code that doesn't seem to make sense (private SpriteBatch spriteBatch = null;) in the Game1 code. This of course is redundant and cause the game not to compile. And.... naturally, the downloaded source code runs fine. Why? Because this line of code is not in the project. I imagine the XNA guru they had reviewing this book (how come they don't hand the book to a total newbie and say 'here, follow this book exactly and tell us when the code examples dont work') fixed the errors he seen on the fly without thinking ..oh, a total newbie won't know this is an obvious mistake..

But I can honestly say I have NEVER read a 'teach yourself' programming book with flawless code examples. And of course the downloaded source always works and you just have to compare your file with thier file and see what is different. The only positive note I can say about the poor state of quality control with newbie programming books in general is that in a way it teaches you to troubleshoot code. But, for someone who is completely new and doesn't pick up on these things it is very frustrating. I'm lucky now in that I have learned enough that I can fix these errors, but a few years ago I would have just tossed this book out of frustration when I do exactly as instructed and it still doesnt work.

To the people who write these books I have a suggestion....

If the person in charge of quality control has ever written a single line of code they are not qualified to review a book targeting newbies. Give the book to your spouse, neighbor, 12 year old, etc. who will quickly hand it back to you 5 times every chapter and say 'hey, I did what it said and got a bunch of errors', or 'hey, it assumes here on page whatever I know where to type this'.

Now, all that being said, this is a darn good book. The authors make XNA and XBOX programming about as simple as possible... the examples are explained very well and easy to follow. If you have gone through another C# teach yourself newbie book you should minimal trouble getting a game up and running in just an hour or so!

This is a great book to help you get started with XNA. I like the fact that it's straight and to the point with no fluff. Covers 2D and 3D game programming including skeletal animation. All sample code compiles and runs as advertised and is explained in detail. I had a bad experience with another XNA book so I'm glad I found this one.

Black and White!

A wonderful book that considers many areas, not all, that a Spirit-filled believer should and would be concerned about! If you want to get a biblical grasp of how discernment works, this book is for you. What I like about this pentecostal perspective of discernment is his grounding in the Word of God, not emotions. He convinces you that you can move with the Spirit of God and be scripturally grounded. If you are seeing visions, etc. and they don't line up with the Word, then guess where they are coming from. Yes, it can be that simple! An especially helpful, insightful and prophetic part of the book is the "Sharpening Your Discernment" chapter, subsection Discernment and Charity. He describes what Christian love (agape) is based on what the Lord says and not the current "soulish" luv! Compromising with the truth and being a "peacekeeper" for the sake of ecumenism or unity is not love. Jesus was a "Peacemaker" who sets the example, along with the rest of the Word. Buy this book, pray while reading this book, and especially, be guided by the Word of God and the Spirit while reading this book and you will advance against the kingdom of this world!

SPACE FAMILY ROBINSON Is A Welcome Return To Simpler Times With Simpler Stories

Ah, the 1960's! What a period in American history were the fun-loving sixties! Life was so much simpler then ... well, that is, except for that whole Vietnam thing that started ... and the Cold War ... and the assassination of JFK ... and probably some other things. Still, it had the Space Race. It had TV's STAR TREK and LOST IN SPACE ... but, before those popular programs were given their chance to shape a generation, the Robinson family was already `lost in space' in the oft-overlooked SPACE FAMILY ROBINSON, given premium treatment here with the collection of VOLUME 4 of their forgotten tales.

(NOTE: the following review will contain minor spoilers necessary solely for the discussion of characters and plot. If you're the kind of reader who prefers a review entirely spoiler-free, then I'd encourage you to skip down to the last two paragraphs for my final assessment. If, however, you're accepting of a few modest hints at `things to come,' then read on ...)

If you're familiar with the TV program, then you already know the story - a family, the Robinsons, meant to be the first in space ends up way off-course in the spaceship, trapped thousands of light years from home (i.e. Earth). They braved the final frontier as a family, all four of them trained to live and work amongst the stars, always searching for the path home that eluded them.

What you probably don't know is that the stories of the Robinsons actually began much earlier than the TV show. There's a fair amount of controversy about who founded what exactly (much of this is detailed in this volume's introduction by Brady Connell, son of the late Del Connell who ran Western Publishing Company's comic book efforts at the time of the title's launch), but, in the end, what mattered more was the stories of family and friendships made between these people of Earth and the various aliens they encountered out in the stars.

What still works today is the unbridled sense of enthusiasm prevalent in all of these tales. Despite being stranded and practically forever lost from their home planet, these Robinsons - Craig, June, Tim, Tam, and their pets - maintained an almost militant optimism about their quest to return. In the journeys, they'd help whoever they encountered, often times putting themselves in the face of jeopardy. No matter the odds, they'd prevail ... because that's what families did at times like these. Just like America was kinda/sorta falling apart socially all around itself, one could make the argument that these unexplored worlds and their indigenous dangers paralleled the great social struggle of that era. No matter the risk, the Robinsons faced them. No matter the danger, the Robinsons rushed into the unknown to defend life - theirs and others. Some may find all of this more than a bit passé, but I found it delightful.

And, seriously, science fiction fans couldn't ask for more from SPACE FAMILY ROBINSON. It had space ships. It had space stations. It had ray guns. It had escape shuttles. It had science. It had dinosaurs. It had aliens. It had bird people, plant people, and bug people. It had robots, unexplored planets, time travel, pocket universes, and much, much more. Scribes Dubois and Fallberg went to great lengths to incorporate a contemporary understanding of science, passing along little lessons to their readers, not forcing it down their throats but showing that only those with an understanding of the world around them would survive when mankind broke the barriers of our world.

Not only was it smart and inspiring, but it was everything artistically you'd want to look at. Dan Spiegle's artwork was perfect for the time, choosing to depict the family with basic lines - nothing all that fancy - but sketching and coloring the many environments of these worlds with bright colors, clean interiors, and a snappy sci-fi look. He probably couldn't invest the kind of time and effort spent on `world creation' that happens in today's market, but, for a man who helped bring a different world to life once every thirty days, I thought he did a bang-up job. When it could, he clearly kept it simply; when he knew that the sky was the limit, he delivered something bigger than life ... or, at least, big enough for the lives being lived by the Robinsons.

It's a grand collection. It earns my highest marks.

SPACE FAMILY ROBINSON, VOLUME 4 is published by Dark Horse Comics. Its stories - a collection of single and double-issue reprints - are written by Gaylord Dubois and Carl Fallberg; the art is provided by Dan Spiegle; and the wonderful (wonderful!) cover paintings are done by George Wilson. The hardcover volume bears a cover price of $49.99 ... and, sure, that's a bit steep, but for sci-fi purists like myself, it's definitely worth it if you have the money to spend.

HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION POSSIBLE. The continuing adventures of the Space Family Robinson are nothing short of a pure delight. Of course, coming as they do from the sixties, these yarns are decidedly dated. Everything happens quickly (especially by today's standards) and, to no one's surprise, everything works out the way you'd want (or maybe even predicted) it to. Volume 4 is a slice of pop culture perfection complete with two loving parents, two high-spirited children, their sidekicks (a dog and a parrot), a traveling space station, crazy creatures, friendly aliens, ray guns, and space wars.

In the interests of fairness, I'm pleased to disclose that the fine folks at Dark Horse Comics provided me with a digital copy of SPACE FAMILY ROBINSON, VOLUME 4 for the expressed purposes of completing this review.

Love this stuff. No grim and gritty. No gratuitous sex and violence (no sex, period, actually). Fun and varied stories with spare and beautiful Dan Spiegle artwork. Along with Magnus, Robot Fighter and others, the Gold Key line carved out a distinctive niche on the spinner racks. Not for fans of the overwrought and overworked but "fun for all ages".

Like Christmas in early Spring . . .

Years ago (decades really) I use to read and collect all the SPACE FAMILY ROBINSON comics till one day my whole collection got tossed out by "accident" and which I vowed to replace someday. So discovering the whole collection on-line and available in annuals really made my day and my dream of re-collecting my lost SPACE FAMILY ROBINSON comics come true! The colours are just as vivid as I recall and the texture of the pages feels the same if not better. Plus I love the smell of brand new comic books! Thanks to amazon and the printers of this new re-edition!

About the Author
 Dr. David Clarke is a Christian psychologist, popular speaker, and the author of nine books, including The Total Marriage Makeover, The 6 Steps to Emotional Freedom, A Marriage After God’s Own Heart, Cinderella Meets the Caveman, and Kiss Me Like You Mean It. A graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary and Western Conservative Baptist Seminary, he has been in full-time private practice for twenty-five years. An experienced media guest, Dr. Clarke has appeared on shows produced by numerous television and radio networks. Dr. Clarke has been married to his beautiful wife, Sandy, since 1982.  They have four children.

Saved our marriage.

This book was the last ditch effort for our marriage and it worked! I went through the steps of this book just over a year ago with my husband and our marriage has completely turned around.

Solid advice!

My husband and I struggle with communication issues and "baggage" that was brought to the marriage. Also, we developed lots of bad "worldly" habits since neither of us were Christians for our first 15 years together. I made efforts to tackle our challenges by merely telling my husband "we need to change" or "I can't keep going on like this" or when we see couples go their own ways after the kids leave "that's gonna be us if we don't do something about our relationship." All to no avail. In an exasperated effort to find a better way I picked up Dr. Clarke's book and read it right away. I've read lots of Cloud/Townsend books as well as tons of other Christian self-help and thought this book gave good, solid advice, and practical step-by-step instructions for how to deal with our issues. We've started implementing the steps and already see the difference in our relationship. I think a big thing that most people don't give enough consideration to is all the hurts that we bring to our relationships and how they affect how we interact with our spouses, whether we realize it or not. This is huge! Dr. Clarke gives excellent advice on how to purge those hurts from our deepest places and cleanse our souls to be free to grow in our relationships. Kudos to you Dr. Clarke! Another book of his I read a few years back that was really good is Cinderella meets the Caveman. I think that's a better book for beginning struggles or maybe for step-by-step advice after you and your spouse have healed your wounds through this book, and are attempting to build good day-to-day habits.
Both worthy reads. Dr. Clarke blends his counseling advice with a great sense of humor and a gift for hitting the nail on the head without it hurting too much! :-)

This book comes down very hard on husbands, especially me. However, it was well justified. More husbands should read this book.
