He introduces the chores of packing the many packages, the mishaps of weather and the mischief of his faithful helper, North Polar Bear, to his sons and daughter--whose names are added or omitted from the letters as the family grows. Derek Jacobi is fully in the spirit of these epistles, and listeners hear how Tolkien, also, elaborates with one year's letters, and can only send a few lines and a drawing the next. The one missed step is the annoying choice of just one music selection which separates the letters. Nevertheless, make this audio program a holiday tradition. A fantastic collection tragically edited short

My father's copy remains one of my favorite Christmas books, but when I bought this planning on reading it to my children, I hadn't noticed that many of the letters were cut short without any warning or explaination.
If you plan on buying this FANTASTIC book, avoid the version with fold out letters enclosed within. All the letters are cut down to one page, regardless of their original length.

Letters is a Lovely Christmas Gift

Written and illustrated by J.R.R. Tolkien, Letters From Father Christmas is a charming collection of personal letters that Tolkien send to his children under the guise of Father Christmas. While they begin rather simply, over the span of 20 years a fascinating tale is spun; with Father Christmas getting into crazy antics with his best friend North Pole Bear and fending off invasions from goblin armies. And the illustrations that are included are a lot of fun. The lengths to which Tolkien goes to to create this elaborate fantasy for his children are really amazing. Yet the letters tell an incomplete story, and are colored by outside influences that aren’t always clear. Still, Letters From Father Christmas is a remarkable book that’s full of the wonder and magic of the season.

Awaken Your Inner Child

This is a charming book, full of wonderful illustrations drawn by Tolkien himself. The cast of characters is wonderfully amusing, especially North Polar Bear, who gets into all sorts of mischief every year. There are even descriptions of wars between Father Christmas and the neighboring Goblins, reminiscent of the Goblin wars depicted in The Hobbit and The Silmarillion.
The book is also bittersweet, as it spans almost 20 years, and Tolkien begins to address his letters to fewer and fewer children, until only his youngest, his daughter Priscilla, still awaits her letter from Father Christmas. It shows how his children have grown, and Father Christmas himself seems sad as his children stop believing in Christmas magic. The last letter is especially poignant, as Father Christmas says goodbye to the children.
This is a great book to read during the holiday season, but it can really be enjoyed any time of year. It's funny, magical, and made me feel like a child again. I recommend this book not only to fans of Tolkien, but to anyone who wants to get into the Christmas spirit.
