A Must-Have for any Canadian Rock Music Fan

This book is quite brilliant, Michael Barclay along with Ian A.D Jack and Jason Schneider have put together an amazing book which looks at various Canadian musicians between 1985-1995. I found this book great because it sort of shined light on a lot of amazing bands and individual musicians throughout this era that didn't have a source detailing their history, influence etc.
Being a big fan of Halifax bands as well (sloan, thrush hermit, etc.) I was very happy when i saw that the halifax scene or "underground" was given a very detailed account.
The histories of several bands were given full chapters such as The tragically Hip, Blue Rodeo and Sloan. The punk music scene in Western Canada was also given a spotlight. All-in-all any music fan would love this! I definetly do!

The bible on Canadian Rock is reverently written, and interesting through and through, chock full of fascinating information and in depth looks at the finest of the CanRock scene, including the oft-overlooked Sloan. Well worth reading.

No, The Artists Were Not Popular Acts...They Were Underground Musicians

It seems the previous reviewer hasn't even read the book. Or if he has, he's completely misunderstood the premise of it.

Yes, it's true that music from the United States or Britain was more "popular" (and ergo, a bigger part of people's so-called "life changing" experiences). But so much of the music and many of the musicians presented in this book were underground (a claim that even their American or British counterparts would find difficult to make).

And that's actually the beauty of it. As I'm reading this tome, I find myself searching out CD's by the artists (none of whom, or very very few of whom are available via retail stores). It's part of an enjoyable journey: to read about interesting musicians and interesting music, and searching for the very same music via alternative (excuse the pun, lol!) methods, ie: via the Internet. Some of the musicians have moved on to other stages in their lives (some becoming national politicians) and I've even been able to contact them to get a copy of their releases.

So don't buy this book if you have a national chip on your shoulder. If you want to read about popular artists from the 70's/80's/90's, go pick up an unauthorized biography of the Sex Pistols/Duran Duran/Nirvana at your local library. But if you want to delve deeper, into the music that was bubbling just under the surface, buy this book. You will not be disappointed.

incredible book!

I have read this book about a year ago and used the guides in the back, well, I had such good success with it I continued to use what I learned. Unfortunately, I listened to the other so called experts and the say my techniques were wrong. I changed the way I played and continued to listen to the other and lost more money than I won. I bought your book once again and read it front to back and used my techniques that I developed and threw out the critics views. I strongly urge those who want an upper hand at the blackjack tables to read, memorize, and to sleep with this book under thier pillows.

A Strange Mix of Statistics and Superstition

I bought this book on in an airport and enjoyed it. I got me interested in learning how to play blackjack correctly, so, in that sense, it was great. It's relatively clear and geared toward the beginner. The mathematical focus of some sections made the strategies more easy to understand. The problem with this book, however, is that it sometimes rejects the correct play. If you are ahead in the count, keep playing. Leaving the table, even when you're losing, basically amounts to wasting all the effort you put into counting. Also, streak betting is just plain superstition. If you can count, this information is more valuable than the tendancy for streaks to indicate a favorable count. Finally, If somebody at the table doesn't make the correct plays, you don't have to leave. It is just as likely to help as to hurt you. It was ok, but I'm sure there are better books than this.

Take the Money and Run

Having never played blackjack at a casino I found this book highly informative and reader friendly. The author is very specific in his presentation of statistical analysis of the game and presents a plausible method for winning this game. However, the authors insitance that one leave the casino when they reach a certain level of winnings is clearly a gamblers fallacy and leads me to question the accuracy of his stated statistics. The truth is that the statistics should never vary according to an individual player's win or loss streak. A 65% probability is a 65% probability. The author claims to feel better when he leaves a winner. How bizarre this seems for a man who claims to be a "professional" gambler.
His proposition is that somehow taking a break from the game increases one's odds of winning. Nothing could be futher from statistical truth. If in fact as he states that card counting gives a player a 1-2% edge then logic dictates that playing continuosly is the way to maximiz one's profits.
One must test his propositions in order to feel comfortable using these card counting strategies.

Great not just for Editors - but for Screenwriters, Directors - and even Creative Producers as well

In "Between the Scenes," Jeffrey Michael Bays has distilled the art of what many excellent editors do instinctively. Writers and Directors can learn a great deal from the way an Editor sculpts the raw footage to shifting between beats, scenes and sequences to cinematically express the gestalt of the internalized journey of the characters.

To illuminate this full palette of transitional techniques, he breaks them down into easy-to-understand categories, using examples as diverse as Hitchcock, to that famous viral You Tube Hitler clip :-) to a full case study on Ridley Scott's "Gladiator," to even the differences between cutting for film versus TV - all of which help put these strategic approaches in entertaining context. He further encourages you to synthesize these tools immediately by analyzing the script or project you're currently working on to assess which tools might be best used, where, for the greatest dramatic effect - and why.

As a writer or a director, your project can only benefit from your anticipating the same considerations your Editor will eventually be confronted with: Have you put the story in context and adequately conveyed the underlying mood? Have you left sufficient white space to allow your audience to think and feel? (I loved the concept of the "echo line" - reverberating from one scene and lingering into the next). Have you varied the length, intensity and mood of your scenes to achieve the right overall rhythm? Should you withhold, behold, tease or please? ;-)

Writers usually have a very specific reason for why they chose to set a scene in a specific locale, but this book analyzes why a Director might creatively change some of those all critical locations, the time, weather, etc. (other than just budgetary or logistical constraints) - and encourages Writers to preconceive these creative juxtapositions. Most writers and directors are adept at using binary oppositions to achieve contrast but all too many forget (or don't have the patience) to stay that extra beat to capture critical character reactions. This book illustrates why all of these are so critical to multimedia storytelling.

We've all heard that a film is created three times: once when it is written (the whole story world created by the screenwriter), then when it is shot (what the Actors but especially the Director bring to capture the essence of moments in the lens) then finally, when the Editor puzzles together the pieces of the best of what was shot. And (if you're lucky), a great producer can also contribute immeasurably during development). In his "Between the Scenes," Jeffrey Michael Bays gives all three key phase leaders a great deal to consider when plying their craft - be it for film or Televison, on the screen or even still on the script page - as to how to connect their audience with a new character, relieve or build tension - and ultimately: emotionally and intellectually engage their audience.

Jeffrey Michael Bays's "Between the Scenes" uncovers so many unsung facets to filmmaking, you wonder why this material hasn't come to light yet. The author is aware of characters, music, objects, symbols, and other layers on how and why films flow. The choices of transition, when to build or reveal character, build tension, or provoke or answer questions. These are all done on various levels with various films. This is pure cinema, and storytelling in this art, which is what we set out to do. Changes from one scene to another keep us watching and make us feel think, and wishing for more.

Self-help without the jargon

This title was a recent selection for a book discussion group that I helped organize for my library. As the only male in the group, I felt somewhat compelled to offer token protest to the selection of this classic example of a "woman's book," but actually I was intrigued by it. Everything I had read about "Gift From the Sea" praised its meditative quality and I had to admit that the promise of that rather appealed to me.
I wound up reading the bulk of the book on Mothers' Day, which seemed quite appropriate, given that among the many issues Lindbergh addresses here is the need for mothers to find a balance between their own needs and those of their children and husbands. The need for time to one's self, a "room of one's own", the need for a spriritual dimension to one's existence--well, it seems so obvious that these needs have to be met if a woman--if any human being--is to be fulfilled and to be able to meet her (or his) responsibilities with joy rather than with dread. But the lessons that Anne Morrow Lindbergh taught in 1955 still need to be voiced in 2000--perhaps more than ever. Lindbergh seems prescient when she speaks of the dangers of the "life of multiplicity" which had already taken root in the immediate post-War era. We know all too well that it has not gotten any better in the past 50 years and that women's lives in particular have become more stressful and, to use Lindbergh's word, "fragmented" in the past half-century.
What distinguishes Lindbergh's book from today's current crop of self-help or New Age sprititual books though is its lyrical quality. Her careful, belletristic prose is soothing and, yes, meditative in and of itself. Reading it seems to bring about the very centeredness and balance that she seeks to describe.
Although she includes no bibliography (and rightly so, as this is not a tract), I would hope that many of her readers would be inspired to seek out the works of some of the writers she quotes in the context of these essays. She does the world a great service in suggesting how Rilke, for example, whose poetry may seem impenetrable at first, can actually speak to the concerns of our own lives.

A Few Shells

What timeless wisdom there is in this little book. Although it was written many decades ago, the challenges and issues faced by Anne Morrow Lindbergh are the same ones faced by women in today's crazy, bustling world. In fact, although women in Siberia, Cameroon, or Ceylon might not have her specific set of circumstances, they can still identify with Lindbergh's ponderings about a woman's life, her obligations, her relationships, and her needs. She lived in an upscale suburb of Connecticut and was the mother of five children, and yet there's something in her writing that can touch the souls of women everywhere whether in a grass hut or trailer beside a busy highway

The chapters in Gift from the Sea center on Lindbergh's musings during a two-week vacation at the shore. Leaving husband, children, and house behind, she lives in a bare beach cabin without heat, telephone, plumbing, hot water, rugs, or curtains. She finds simplicity beautiful and longs to take it home to Connecticut when her vacation ends.

Lindbergh takes a shell at a time and describes it in relation to other things in a woman's life. For instance, the moon shell reminds her that quiet time, solitude, contemplation, and "something of one's own" is needed. The double-sunrise represents the pure relationship found in early stages of friendship and marriage, and she reminds the reader that there is no permanent return to an old form of relationship since all are in the process of change. The oyster bed symbolizes the middle years of marriage and family, especially as the home itself grows and expands to accommodate the growing family.

I first read this book when I was a young mother and could readily understand Lindbergh's comment that saints were so rarely married woman because of the distractions inherent in raising children and running a house. "Human relationships with their myriad pulls--woman's normal occupations in general run counter to creative life, or contemplative life, or saintly life." Now in midlife, I can better understand her affinity for all the shells as reminders that each cycle of the wave, the tide, and the relationship is valid.

I have had my copy since the early 80's, this book is timeless. With renewed interest, I bought several copies for friends after reading The Aviators Wife, A book about the Lindbergh's. Giving one to a bride who is having a beach themed wedding. Love the introspect about relationships and family.

About the Author
Moses Fayngold is Special Lecturer at the Physics Department of the New Jersey Institute of Technology, where he is also involved in the research activities of the Multi-Disciplinary Optical Science and Engineering Program. He has been lecturing for some 20 years on special relativity, both to non-specialized audiences in public planetariums as well as to undergraduate and graduate students.

Vadim Fayngold holds two bachelor degrees - one in Physics and one in Computer Science. While being a research assistant at the Department of Computer Engineering (Polytechnic University, New York), he worked on computer simulation of complex processes in fluid dynamics. He won a scholarship in the REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) program sponsored by the NSF National Science Foundation,) and had worked in the area of Plasma Physics at the University of California (Irvine). He acquired an extensive experience in computer simulation while participating in the MECO (Muon-Electron Conversion) project. Vadim Fayngold came to the idea of writing this book while working on computer animations of various relativistic and quantum-mechanical phenomena.
