Another great bok from a wonderful poet

I love Lang Leav's work. I own her other books, and I couldn't pass up owning this as soon as I could.

I can relate to her work, and it's that one of the reasons we read poetry? To relate and have our feelings in print on a page, even if we can say it quite the same way, similar to why we listen to music.

Whether you own her previous work or not, I definitely recommend this book.

Such beautiful words and imagery. This poetry can be read at any age. I am almost 30 and damn these poems got me in touch with my 17 year old self and reminded me how much I miss her lol. These are the words I wish I could've read then. Highly highly recommend.

A new, valuable introduction to Int'L Law

The 7th edition of this classic among student textbooks builds upon the clarity and stile Michael Akehurst was famous for, and gives an up to date introduction to International Law. The author, Peter Malanczuk, Professor of International Law at the University of Amsterdam, included systematic references which will enable the reader to begin a journey into the advanced subjects of the Law - if he/she so wishes. Malanczuks perspective is broad and serves the needs both of students in International Law and in International Relations.

A very good international law book

"Akehurst's Modern Introduction to International Law" by Peter Malanczuk is one of the best books on International Law for scholars and students of law, now a days. The text was re-written by Professor Peter Malanczuk (Erasmus University, Rotterdam) with aditional information based on the new developments like International Environmental Law or International Economic Law.
Certainly the basics of the book correspond to older editions, but new chapters make it a clear example of an "International Law" book than a modest "Introduction".
The text is well written and the concepts are in order. However, definitions about important international legal institutions were missed, for example, International Environmental Law, Custom, etc. These and other definitions are important for students in order to have clarity on the institutions and the subject.
The book, however, is well structured, keeping the interest of the reader on the topics of International Law and giving information on every topic to search further on in other sources.
I hope that the book will have translation to other languages.

Time for an 8th Edition?

Akehurst's Modern Introduction to International Law provides a sound basis for understanding the United Nations, treaties, and international law. The only drawback to the book is that the material is becoming somewaht dated with its 1997 copyright.

The book has gone through a number of reprints in between 1998 and 2004 leading me to suggest a 8th edition for 2006. The book

provided an academic premier for a course in Space Law. I enjoyed the Latin legal terms spread throughout the text. I do recommend that the reader have some prior knowledge of the law to more fully appreciate the text.

The author is a writer and scholar on the Washington scene. He served in the Johnson White House and as a Senate staffer. His previous books include: the just released, Nothing to Fear: FDR in Photographs (Vandamere Press, 2001); the internationally acclaimed Roosevelt biography, FDR's Splendid Deception, 3rd Edition (Vandamere Press, 1999); Black Bird Fly Away: Disabled in an Able-bodied World (Vandamere Press, 1998); By Trust Betrayed: Patients, Physicians, and the License to Kill in the Third Reich, 2nd Edition (Vandamere Press, 1995); and Advise and Obstruct: The Role of the United States Senate in Foreign Policy Decisions (Delacorte, 1969), a Pulitzer Prize Nominee. His articles have appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, People, Mainstream, and many other publications. He is a highly regarded and popular speaker nationwide on both disability and presidential history. He is the father of the Architectural Barriers Act, and considered to be the grandfather of the Disability Rights Act. Gallagher contracted paralytic polio in 1952. He was rehabilitated at the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation. He is paraplegic, uses a wheelchair, and lives in Cabin John, Maryland. In 1995 he was awarded the prestigious Henry B. Betts award in recognition of his lifelong contributions to disability thought.

An historical look back in the recent history of Alaska

The author has captured the man who is Etok and at the same time given us a look into politics in early Alaska statehood. Etok's intensity of feelings for his people and his land was powerful and unharnessed. This is demonstrated well here. Also, we get a look into both congressional and presidential politics of this era. This book is more than about this one man.

Couldn't put it down...

Etok is my uncle. I knew it had a lot about Alaska Native land claims, but it was so much more. I learned more about my own family, more about Inupiaq culture, and of course, more about Native rights and the political resurgence of Alaska Natives. It was a really good book! I couldn't put it down.

I recommend it to anyone who's interested in Native Land Claims, or Native rights in general.

Excellent History

I was a childhood friend of Charlie. We called him "Etook," not "Etok," if the spelling is any indication of pronunciation. It's a curious difference that makes me wonder about the real depth of the author in penetrating this man's story, but it's certainly accurate in respect to the living conditions and culture I knew as a young white boy, the son of a missionary, living in the village of Barrow.

The book covers the technical and organisational sides (Weapons, To&E, ect.) of the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. This book covers the German side, and is brightly written with an insight into military equipment, and the status of the German side, that is unprecedented. The detail is stunning, and the author goes into each units present in this campaign, and each piece of equipment used.
It also compiles tactics, and gives the reader a full understanding of initial part of this conflict.

If there is a downside for anyone it might be that its too tecnical for some. However for me its spot on!

It compiles all know data for many different sources into a compendium, that is a must have for all military historians, armature or professional.

I have literately hundreds of books, micro films, and diagrams on this subject; however, it seems I only needed this one.

This book is a historical landmark in the understanding of the most costly conflict in the world.

It is, simply the best book on the subject so far

This second volume is a continuation of the fine work I have come to
expect of Mr. Askey. A listing of the major weapons used by the Germans
in the Barbarossa campaign with brief histories. All of the units that
took part with comprehensive TOE and actual equipment and personel for
each unit from division down to separate company sized units that took
part. Plus those that did not but were stationed elsewhere either
fighting on other fronts or as garrisons. All of them. Not only that
but unit histories as well. Plus support units. Plus headquarters.

As they say on TV, 'But wait, there's more'. Weapons and weapon system
capabilites in realation to one another and those weapon systems of the
Soviets. Aircraft. AFV. Transport. Artillery. Equipment database
anyone?

There is much more to come in this series as shown in the Appendix.
Anyone interested in the East Front should find some way to purchase
this series. It's well worth the investment. Can't wait for the rest.

Everything you ever needed to know about the German Army of the East (and indeed the Wehrmacht as a whole) on that fateful day – June 22nd, 1941.

Volumes IIa and IIb – especially the former, which is the largest book – of Askey’s Barbarossa series covers the entire organisational and statistical approach to understanding the Wehrmacht at the outset of Operation Barbarossa.

We’re talking about weapons, logistics, tables of equipment, orders of battle, distribution of military equipment throughout the Reich. EVERYTHING. If you want to know the history and technical details of each weapon in service with the Wehrmacht in 1941, read these volumes. If you want to know the technical efficiency of the German logistical effort for Operation Barbarossa (something which historians always criticise, unjustly), read these volumes. If you want to know the differing capabilities and qualities between the various German divisions deployed throughout the Reich in 1941 according to category (e.g. 1st Wave, 2nd Wave, 3rd Wave, etc. …) and authorised strength vs. actual strength, read these volumes. If you want to know the exact amount of tanks, aircraft, howitzers, guns, trucks, cars and halftracks each German army group, air fleet or other independent theatre command (e.g. The Afrika Korps) had in June 1941, read these volumes.

As well as setting the stage to understanding the sheer military and economic scale of what was arguably the most breathtaking military campaign in history, the statistical elements in Volume IIa and IIb are also essential in dispelling age-old myths that are still perpetuated by historians who ignore the mathematical method in drawing their conclusion. No longer are young scholars at the mercy of academic dinosaurs – the old breed of World War II historians – who claim with unflattering gusto that the Pak 36 was the worst anti-tank gun in history (forget the fact that this ‘door-knocker’ could destroy 94 per cent of the Soviet Union’s 1941 tank arsenal at stand-off combat ranges) or that a 1941-type panzer division was inherently weaker due to having only a single tank regiment (forget the fact that in 1941 the Germans deployed a higher proportion of better gunned and protected armoured charges than in 1940 and for all intensive purposes, also forget the over five hundred comparatively well-armed assault guns and tank destroyers that also partook in Barbarossa – unlike in the Case Yellow). The statistical reality – as revealed by Askey – paints quite a different picture to the regurgitated bilge that comes from the old breed of history tellers which is claimed as ‘fact’ without challenge. Critical reassessment of modern history’s greatest invasion by way of statistical analysis – what could be better?

Another core theme present throughout the book is that numbers – such as amount of divisions a given military may possess in its order of battle and the arsenal of weapons at its disposal and its available manpower pool – do not (and as history has indeed witnessed in the initial phases of Operation Barbarossa) dictate outcomes. Technically – according to most purely organisational-based simulations – the German Army should have been destroyed on the Soviet border, yet it made it to within an ace of the Soviet capital; other factors such as strategy, training, experience, morale, leadership quality, communications and logistical efficiency also need to be acknowledge in assessing the overall effectiveness of an army.

Indeed, all the information displayed in Volumes I, IIa and IIb (and those yet to be released), accumulated through a decade of research, is done with the intention of recreating a new and more accurate military simulation of the Operation Barbarossa scenario.

But he never forgets history. There is a sense of time in the book, which is so often lacking in attempts to reconstruct traditional cultures. Even as the traditional patterns of subsistence techniques, of rituals and religion of kinship and social organization are described, the reader anticipates the dramatic changes in the Washo world to be wrought by the coming of the white man. Each stage of readjustment brought about by this event is analyzed. The Washo are not seen in isolation, but as part of the development of the region and its economy. They interact with and are interdependent with whites in the earlier stages of contact. But then the needs of the white man's economy change and there is no longer any place for most of the Washo. The Washo adapt to this circumstance, as they have adapted to previous conditions. In doing so they exhibit some continuities with the past and their traditional culture and at the same time adopt new patterns of behavior. This is not a happy world for the Washo. For some poverty and uselessness sap their vitality and destroy motivation, but the Washo identity is retained, and the Washo continue to cope with life as it is.
